A War in the Desert

In May of last year, I wrote a piece for Jacobin about the violence on the US-Mexico border. The point of the piece was to push back against the idea that the depravities and violence of ICE and the Border Patrol are unique manifestations of the Trump presidency. Rather, I attempted to show that the border regime was created to grind up immigrant lives – lives that have no value because of their legal status, their race/ethnicity, their economic class, and because they tend to die in places far from the public eye. They become grim statistics that are safely ignored as we go about our days trying to keep our jobs, make rent, and generally scrape by.
